BERN NOTICE: The More Bernie Is Attacked On Health Care, The More He Surges In the Polls
Data from the Medicare for All debate prove the Obi Wan Kenobi Principle.

For months, the insurance industry, the drug industry and its allied candidates in the Democratic presidential primary have been intensifying their attacks on Bernie’s Medicare for All plan — including in a negative ad blitz in Iowa. And now the polls show a clear trend: the more intense the attacks, the more polls show voters most trust Bernie on the health care issue.
Back in 2018, Politico’s headline blared “Establishment looks to crush liberals on Medicare for All” — and a recent New York Times report shows that the establishment is panicking. Meanwhile, a new Washington Post report highlights the underhanded tactics that the health care industry is deploying to try to crush Bernie’s campaign.
But a passage buried at the bottom of a Politico story today shows that these efforts are wildly backfiring:
The only person who hasn’t budged (from Medicare for All) is Sanders…Over the course of just a few years, he has brought Medicare for All from the political fringes to the heart of the debate about who should lead the party in 2020…voters still rank him as the person who best understands health care and is best equipped to fix the problems in the current health system. Surveys also show most Democratic voters also still approve of Medicare for All.
The polling data is clear:
• BERNIE HASN’T WAVERED & IS NOW THE MOST TRUSTED ON HEALTH CARE: As the attacks on Medicare for All have intensified since July, two CNN polls, many Reuters polls, an ABC/WashPost poll, a Morning Consult poll and a Kaiser Family Foundation poll have shown that voters see Bernie as the most trusted candidate on the health care issue.
• MEDICARE FOR ALL REMAINS POPULAR, DESPITE THE ATTACKS: Polls from Politico/Morning Consult poll, Monmouth, HarrisX, RealClear Opinion Research, Morning Consult, YouGov, ABC News/Washington Post, Quinnipiac, Kaiser, NBC/Wall Street Journal and Nationscape have shown strong majority support for Medicare for All among Democratic voters. What’s particularly significant about these numbers is that in their questions, many polls only tell survey respondents negative messages about Medicare for All — and yet support for the program nonetheless remains strong.
• OPPOSITION TO MEDICARE FOR ALL IS WILDLY OVERSTATED: In the media and on the campaign trail, there have been plenty of claims that Democratic voters are mobilized against Medicare for All. Indeed, Joe Biden recently insisted “the vast majority of Democrats do not support Medicare for All.” But Kaiser Health News ruled that claim false — and for good reason: the data show exactly the opposite. Indeed, a Washington Post report on the data summarized the larger trend: “Among all Democrats we surveyed, 68 percent support ‘providing government-run health insurance to all Americans,’ while 65 percent endorse the enactment of Medicare-for-all…Only 17 percent opposed Medicare-for-all.”
Why aren’t the Medicare for All attacks working against Bernie? A glimpse of some recent health care news suggest it is because voters are disgusted with the current corporate-run system:
“1 in 4 Americans have avoided care because they were unsure of what their health insurance covers”
“Thousands of Poor Patients Face Lawsuits From Nonprofit Hospitals That Trap Them in Debt”
“Voters strongly oppose employers to be allowed to change or eliminate an employee’s health insurance against the employee’s wishes”
All of this is a reminder that when it comes to Bernie and Medicare for All, the Obi Wan Kenobi Principle of Politics is at work.
“If you strike me down,” Kenobi warned Darth Vader, “I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”
